course info

A short drive from the busy streets of Marrakech you will find the stunning mountains of Toubkal National Park and the highest mountain in the country Jbel Toubkal. At 4167m this peak is a fantastic introduction to trekking abroad and requires no technical equipment to reach its summit.

Our Toubkal Trek takes you on an incredible journey through the heart of the Atlas Mountains giving you the chance to relax and enjoy your time in the mountains. During the trek you will walk over high passes, through stunning mountain scenery and experience the excellent hospitality of the local Berber people. You will also taste the most amazing Moroccan food, see the largest waterfalls in the park and make your attempt on two of the highest mountains in North Africa - Jbel Toubkal and Ras. It’s an amazing experience and one you will never forget.

Trek Leaders.

This trek is led by British Expedition Leader Matt Cooper who has extensive experience of leading treks in Morocco with four successful expeditions to the summit of Jbel Toubkal. Matt has also guided the three highest peaks in Morocco (Toubkal, Oukaimeden and Jbel Mgoun). The trek will also be supported by local staff and muleteers who are an essential part of all of our Morocco expeditions.

Who is this for?

Some hill walking or trekking experience would be beneficial, however, a good level of fitness and a desire for adventure is what’s really required for this expedition! If you’re unsure about your experience why not send us an email and we can discuss further!

Accommodation During the Trek

Our accommodation in the mountains is a combination of guest houses and mountain refuge. Refuges are mountain huts with dorm-style rooms with all our group staying together. In Marrakech we will stay in a traditional luxury Riad that will have air conditioning, rooftop terrace and sunbeds. All rooms in Marrakech are twin rooms.

Altitude Sickness

With years of leading treks at altitude, we understand the importance of acclimatisation and making sure our clients get the best shot at reaching the summit. This is why we use a five-day itinerary which allows you to ascend slowly giving your body time to adjust to the change in altitude.

My partner and I booked Matt for two days mountaineering instruction so we could learn how to use ropes on climbs that were out of our comfort zone. We had a fantastic two days and Matts structured approach allowed us to take it all in and practice all the techniques over and over again. We both now feel more confident to take on more adventurous scrambles. Thanks Matt

Andy and karren

Fantastic day on the Back to Basics Navigation course with Matt. Very well organised and learnt a lot. Matt was very professional and great at teaching the skills with lots of patience and encouragement. Really enjoyed it and will definitely be signing up to other courses in future. Highly recommended.

Chontelle Wright

A great day out learning how to use a map and compass with Matt. His teaching style gave us just the right amount of information without feeling overloaded. I would highly recommend Matt !

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

Chris Mansell

We attended a navigation course today with Matt. He was fantastic, can’t rate him highly enough! We had no knowledge at all, but have come home feeling confident and ready to tackle our adventure! Thank you Matt for a fabulous, fun day

Claire Black

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!

Ferne Davies

Awesome day with Matt teaching my 11yr old son and I the basics of climbing. Very patient and approachable would highly recommend Matt to anyone with an interest in rock climbing. Really fun day enjoyed by all!

Ian Roberts

All I can say is amazing!! Never scrambled before Matt looked after us supported us though the scary bits and made the whole day brilliant.

Karen Williams

Had a fantastic weekend with Matt on the mountain skills course - he is really friendly + approachable, and tailored the two days to what we enjoyed + wanted to learn. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to build their confidence with mountain hiking + navigation!

Recently attended an intermediate rock skills course in the Peak District. Really great weekend and excellent fun. Matt is a top bloke; very knowledgeable and just the right amount of laid back. Allows all the information to really sink in - effective teaching!

Matt Pomfrett

Excellent day out with Matt on my first ever Scramble. I found it pretty tough in places but Matt was always there to put me at ease, offer instruction and with his support I made it to the top. Would highly recommend to others.

You don’t need to be super fit to join this trek, but you will need a reasonable level of fitness and a spirit for adventure. We will be walking around 6-8 miles per day but this is done slowly and with plenty of rests and opportunities to take in the scenery.

No, this trek is suitable for all levels and it’s a perfect opportunity to summit your first 4000m peak. If you have previous experience of trekking abroad its beneficial but certainly not essential.

Our accommodation in the mountains is a combination of guest houses and mountain refuge. Refuges are mountain huts with dorm-style rooms with all our group staying together. In Marrakesh we will stay in a traditional luxury Riad that will have air conditioning, rooftop terrace and sunbeds. All rooms in Marrakesh are twin rooms.

Morocco is, for the most part, a safe country to visit. Its crime rates are relatively low, but it is advised to remain vigilant at all times and keep your valuables in a safe place. It is a friendly Muslim country, so it is expected of tourists to be respectful of Islamic culture and customs.

All countries entry requirements are open to last-minute change so it's important to check FCO advice before travelling. Morocco is currently only allowing vaccinated travellers into the country and they are requesting a PCR test to be taken before you leave the UK.
