The ability to navigate effectively in poor weather and reduced visibility is one of the key skills a trainee Mountain Leader must master and an essential skill for mountain safety. Our Mountain Leader Navigation Workshop will ensure you gain the skills you need and set you on your way towards a positive result at assessment.
The ability to navigate accurately is a fundamental part of the Mountain Leader Assessment and is often the area where trainees can make the most improvements.
During the workshop you will look at fundamental skills like contour interpretation, feature recognition and how to relate the map to the ground. You will also develop your understanding of pacing, timing and how to accurately follow a bearing in complex terrain. By the end of the workshop, you can expect to have improved your navigation and gained a better understanding of the level required for a successful outcome at assessment.

This course will be delivered by Matt Cooper, a qualified Mountaineering Instructor (MCI) and Winter Mountain Leader with years of experience working in the mountains and delivery of Mountain Leader courses. Matt is also a full member of Mountain Training, a committee member of The Association of Mountaineering Instructors and a member of Mountain Rescue.
