Fun & friendly group courses to take your running up a gear!

Mountain running is less about record times and more about the enjoyment of travelling fast and light in the mountains. For many mountain running is a liberating experience where you shed the heavy walking pack for a lightweight running vest and the freedom of being able to “pop into the mountains” when you get a few hours free away from normal life. You may be surprised to hear that you don’t need to be an athlete to run in the mountains and all shapes and sizes can be found running along the tops. All you need is a good level of fitness, a sense of adventure and some basic skills to ensure you can have a safe and enjoyable day outdoors!

Who is this course aimed at!

This one day course is aimed at road and trail runners looking to take their first steps running in the mountains. During the day we will look at planning, equipment and clothing before heading outside to look at the fundamentals of navigation for runners. After lunch we will head into the mountains to take on a nice steady mountain run which will be around 10km and 800m of ascent but with plenty of breaks and discussions along the way. By the end of the session you can expect to have a had a good workout, gained loads of knowledge about equipment and mountain running while coming away with some solid navigation skills to use on your own adventures.

How fit do you need to be!

While this course is more about skills than pushing you physically, you will need a good level of fitness with the ability to run 10km on trail and rough ground without stopping. Previous courses we’ve had a good mixture of ability where we walk most of the uphill’s and run the flats and downhill sections. We always make sure that everybody is looked after and nobody is left alone. If you want to discuss your fitness levels and find out if this for you, why not drop us an email and we will happily give you our advice. We would also like to stress this workshop is not aimed at elite or high end athletes so if you feel you fall into this category please email us for our alternative options.

If your already a competent mountain/fell runner but looking for a instruction in navigation why not check out our Navigation For Mountain Running course in Snowdonia.

A great day out learning how to use a map and compass with Matt. His teaching style gave us just the right amount of information without feeling overloaded. I would highly recommend Matt !

Chris

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

Chris Mansell

We attended a navigation course today with Matt. He was fantastic, can’t rate him highly enough! We had no knowledge at all, but have come home feeling confident and ready to tackle our adventure! Thank you Matt for a fabulous, fun day

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!

Matt Pomfrett

Excellent day out with Matt on my first ever Scramble. I found it pretty tough in places but Matt was always there to put me at ease, offer instruction and with his support I made it to the top. Would highly recommend to others.

Polly Hornby

This course is more about the skills than it is the distance or speed you can run. Ideally you will be able to run 10km on trails and dont mind going out in the rain or wind but the learning is what we are here for.
