Our Mountaineering Development course is your key to learning all the skills you need to climb in the mountains and lead large routes in the UK and abroad. Over the five days you can expect to look at planning, equipment and climbing gear including receiving expert advice on how to lead your own climbing routes. By the end of the course you will have had five big days in the mountains, gained lots of technical understanding and looked at the skills you need to lead independently in the mountains.
Skills you will cover over the 5 days
- Planning (Weather, guidebooks, route choice).
- Clothing (Layering, gloves, insulation).
- Climbing gear (Placing gear, building belays).
- Climbing Skills
- Technical skills for leading (placing gear, lead belaying).
- Building belays and belaying a second climber.
- Route reading.
- Lead climb coaching
- Navigation (Navigating to and from a climb).
- Climbing big routes in the mountains (Route choice and planning).
- How to climb efficiently (How to reduce faff).
- Different methods for belaying (Guide plate, Italian hitch etc).
- Descending steep ground (Abseiling vs downclimbing).
- Escaping a climb in an emergency and emergency procedures.
The above itinerary gives you a good idea on what we will cover each day but its open to change by your instructor dependent on your previous experience and aspirations.
At the end of the course you will receive feedback and a personal development plan that outlines how you can progress to the next level. You will also receive and information booklet with details about important topics like what equipment to buy, ideal routes to attempt and any other important information. The final day normally concludes at 5pm.

Kit list and meeting location.
Once your booking has been received, we will send you details about where to meet and what time to be there. We will also send you a comprehensive kit list which gives details of what to wear and any equipment you may need. All technical equipment like ropes, climbing rack, helmets and harness are included. If you have your own equipment please bring along with you on the day.
This course typically meets in Capel Curig in Snowdonia at 9am. This will be confirmed on booking.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in the price but luckily Snowdonia has a wide range of places to stay for all budgets. If you require information about places to stay or local campsites, please let us know!
