Our Mountaineering Introduction Course in the Lake District is designed to equip you with the essential skills needed to tackle Grade 2 and 3 scrambles safely using a rope. Led by a qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI), you'll learn the techniques, ropework, and movement skills required to travel confidently on steep and exposed mountain terrain.
There’s no better place to learn mountaineering than Great Langdale in the Lake District. Surrounded by dramatic fells and tackling exciting Grade 2 and 3 scrambling routes, you’ll learn the essential ropework and mountain skills needed to travel safely on steep terrain. By the end of the course, you'll have a strong understanding of mountaineering fundamentals and the confidence to continue developing towards independent adventures in the mountains.
During the course we will cover –
- Planning a mountain day (Weather and how it affects our decision making).
- What equipment do you need and why (Ropes, climbing protection, clothing).
- Scrambling Guidebooks, maps and the grading system.
- Moving over rock (Movement technique).
- Route finding and risk assessment.
- Using the rope for ascent and descent (Abseiling)
- How to use climbing protection and build belays.
- Emergency procedures (What to do in an emergency).
Once your booking has been received, we will send you details about where to meet and what time to be there. We will also send you a comprehensive kit list which gives details of what to wear and any equipment you may need. All technical equipment like ropes, climbing rack, helmets and harness are included. If you have your own equipment please bring it along with you on the day.
