course info

Join me for a day of navigation training in Snowdonia where you will get a chance to refresh any previous navigation skills and develop new ones so you can have safer days in the hills and mountains.

Develop your understanding of the map and its features, learn how to take an accurate bearing and follow it through wild country and learn all the essential techniques you need to navigate in the mountains.

This course is ideal for anybody with limited or previous experience and looking to refresh and learn new navigational skills. Our small group sizes allow us to accommodate all levels of ability from novice to advanced and we guarantee you will come away feeling more confident and with a higher level of navigational ability.

During the day you will look at:

  • Route planning (Planning around bad weather, understanding wind speeds etc)
  • Fundamental navigation skills (Taking a bearing, map features, distance, scale)
  • Strategies for navigating in poor visibility.
  • Contour lines and how they are key to navigating in bad visibility.
  • Compass bearings and how to use them effectively.
  • What to do in an emergency.

How fit do I need to be?

To attend this course you don’t need to be super fit but a good level of fitness will ensure you get the most out of the course. We usually walk around 6-8 miles in mountainous terrain, but we have loads of breaks and make sure that the pace is steady to allow more focus on the navigation. If you're unsure about your fitness or suitability for this course please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

WHY USE THE MOUNTAINEERING COMPANY.

My main aim is to enable you to learn the skills you need in a fun and engaging environment. I purposely keep group sizes small to ensure maximum learning so that our instructors can focus more on you and what you need. I do on occasion bring in one of my friends to instruct or run sessions for me. All of my friends are qualified instructors with years of experience and hold the relevant qualifications, first aid and insurance for the course they will be leading.

Testimonials

My partner and I booked Matt for two days mountaineering instruction so we could learn how to use ropes on climbs that were out of our comfort zone. We had a fantastic two days and Matts structured approach allowed us to take it all in and practice all the techniques over and over again. We both now feel more confident to take on more adventurous scrambles. Thanks Matt

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!
