Fastpacking is best described as fast light and overnight where you head into the hills for a multi-day trail running adventure. Its become hugely popular for established hiking routes like the Pennine Way, Tour du Mont Blanc and the Haute Route with the minimalistic style allowing you to cover large distances in less than half of the normal hiking time.
Our two-day Fastpacking Introduction is a perfect initiation into multi-day running and will show you all the equipment you need to run and camp in the mountains. You will learn about planning, equipment and how to navigate. You will also look at camp craft, personal safety and what to do in an emergency. It really is the most comprehensive Fastpacking course in the UK and will get you fired up to get out and have your own multi-day fastpacking trips.

- Equipment - Tents, camping gear and what to take in your pack.
- Camp Craft - Finding water, pitching tents and cooking.
- Clothing - What to wear and the layering system.
- Navigation - How to navigate using the map and compass.
- GPS - Using GPS and Apps in the mountains
- Emergency procedures.
- Food and nutrition
- Running poles and how to use them.
Who is this course aimed at?
People often worry about attending running courses because of the concern about being the slowest or being left behind, in all my years of instructing this has never been the case! All we ask is that those coming on the course have some previous trail running experience and can run around 10 - 15km. We walk all the uphills, relax on the summits (Photos and cakes) and enjoy relaxed running on the downhills. We never leave people behind and with two instructors you're guaranteed to be taken care of throughout the weekend. We normally finish on Sunday around 2-3 pm for coffee and cake.
This course will be delivered by Matt Cooper a Mountaineering Instructor and Mountain Running Coach. Matt has fastpacked in the UK, the Alps and Fastpacked the Tour du Mont Blanc and numerous routes in France and Switzerland. Matt is an ambassador for Montane and works with them on running and mountaineering projects.
All participants will receive a full kit list detailing essential items they need to attend this course. We do have some lightweight tents (1.2kg) and 30L running packs that we can lend out on a first-come-first-served basis. We would recommend purchasing your own summer sleeping bag.
