course info

Skyrunning is one of the most adventurous ways to enjoy the mountains and combines fell, trail and mountain running with some steep exposed scrambling and lung-busting ascents. Its an incredible experience and is becoming even more popular now the UK hosts some of the premier events like the Glencoe Skyline, Snowdon Skyline and the Mamores VK.

Our Skyrunning Introduction is a two-day course looking at everything you need to begin Skyrunning either for competition or your own personal enjoyment. We will look at planning, equipment, scrambling skills and navigation in the mountains. We will also look at how to manage risk and what to do if you or a partner has an accident.

Day 1

The first day is all about introducing you to general mountain running technique, discussing mountain safety and what to wear on a day of Skyrunning. You will also get a chance to test your nerves on some steeper running terrain and receive coaching on your footwork and movement on rock. (Grade 1 scramble)

Day 2

This day is all about introducing you to steep and exposed ground so you can learn how to move safely and confidently. We will also look at yesterdays techniques and build your knowledge so you can finish the two days with a wealth of important information and techniques.

Our Instructors

All our Instructors are passionate mountain runners and have competed in numerous events like the Skyline series, LDMT and OMM. They are also qualified Mountaineering Instructor and Mountain Leaders who spend most of their free time running in the mountains.

Testimonials

My partner and I booked Matt for two days mountaineering instruction so we could learn how to use ropes on climbs that were out of our comfort zone. We had a fantastic two days and Matts structured approach allowed us to take it all in and practice all the techniques over and over again. We both now feel more confident to take on more adventurous scrambles. Thanks Matt

A great day out learning how to use a map and compass with Matt. His teaching style gave us just the right amount of information without feeling overloaded. I would highly recommend Matt !

Chris

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

Chris Mansell

We attended a navigation course today with Matt. He was fantastic, can’t rate him highly enough! We had no knowledge at all, but have come home feeling confident and ready to tackle our adventure! Thank you Matt for a fabulous, fun day

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!

Excellent day out with Matt on my first ever Scramble. I found it pretty tough in places but Matt was always there to put me at ease, offer instruction and with his support I made it to the top. Would highly recommend to others.

You don't need to be an athlete to attend this course and instead, we ask that you have some previous trail running experience and can run around 10-15km on trails. If you're unsure whether you should book this course, why not email us so we can discuss your level of ability.

The first day is all about getting into the mountains and giving everybody coaching on footwork and climbing technique. We normally deliver the first day on a grade 1 scramble which leads to a summit so you get the true mountain running journey.

The second day we aim to increase the level of difficulty and often push onto grade 1+ or harder for those who are ready. Because we have two instructors on this course we often end up splitting the group to accommodate the different levels of ability.

We send out a course information pack with all bookings which will highlight all the equipment you need and what to bring on the day. Because Skyrunning is pretty much trail running on steep mountain terrain, we ask that you bring trail running shoes, a running pack/vest and a warm layer in case we need to stop. You will also need full waterproofs for this course. For more information please get in touch.
