What to expect!

Our Skyrunning Intro will help you develop a better understanding of all aspects of mountain running from how to ascend steep mountainous terrain - to technical downhills or loose scree. You will receive coaching on how to become more efficient on the uphills, how to use running poles and how to gain confidence running downhill on technical or loose terrain. It's a fantastic two days with no pressure on speed or time and loads of opportunity to progress and develop as a runner. We also give you plenty of time to relax, take pictures and enjoy the incredible views.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 -

Meet and greet with your instructors and discussion about what to wear, suitable footwear and what to put in your pack. Your instructors will then spend the rest of the day with you in the mountains looking at the following techniques -

  • How to move efficiently uphill on moderate to steep terrain.
  • Types of running poles and how to use them effectively.
  • Descending steep technical terrain or loose scree.
  • Footwork masterclass - Improving confidence in your feet.

Finish at 4pm back at our base for refreshments and a talk about nutrition and what to eat while in the mountains.

Day 2 -

  • Training for mountain running.
  • Emergency kit and what to do if it all goes wrong.
  • Basic navigation techniques.
  • Improving flexibility and stretching.

Our Instructors

One thing that will be clear when you meet our running guides is we love running in the mountains. All of our instructors are Mountain Leaders or Mountaineering Instructors and are passionate about Skyrunning. Our team have competed in various Skyrunning and mountain races like the Mourne Skyline, LDMT, Ring of Steall and Mamores VK and have a wealth of knowledge about this activity.

Testimonials

My partner and I booked Matt for two days mountaineering instruction so we could learn how to use ropes on climbs that were out of our comfort zone. We had a fantastic two days and Matts structured approach allowed us to take it all in and practice all the techniques over and over again. We both now feel more confident to take on more adventurous scrambles. Thanks Matt

Fantastic day on the Back to Basics Navigation course with Matt. Very well organised and learnt a lot. Matt was very professional and great at teaching the skills with lots of patience and encouragement. Really enjoyed it and will definitely be signing up to other courses in future. Highly recommended.

Chontelle Wright

A great day out learning how to use a map and compass with Matt. His teaching style gave us just the right amount of information without feeling overloaded. I would highly recommend Matt !

Chris

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

Chris Mansell

We attended a navigation course today with Matt. He was fantastic, can’t rate him highly enough! We had no knowledge at all, but have come home feeling confident and ready to tackle our adventure! Thank you Matt for a fabulous, fun day

Claire Black

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!

Ferne Davies

All I can say is amazing!! Never scrambled before Matt looked after us supported us though the scary bits and made the whole day brilliant.

Recently attended an intermediate rock skills course in the Peak District. Really great weekend and excellent fun. Matt is a top bloke; very knowledgeable and just the right amount of laid back. Allows all the information to really sink in - effective teaching!

Matt Pomfrett

Excellent day out with Matt on my first ever Scramble. I found it pretty tough in places but Matt was always there to put me at ease, offer instruction and with his support I made it to the top. Would highly recommend to others.

You don't need to be an athlete to attend this course and instead, we ask that you have some previous trail running experience and can run around 10km+ on trails. If you're unsure whether you should book this course, why not email us so we can discuss your level of ability.

The first day is all about getting you moving efficiently and confidently in the mountains. You will be on rocky ground, loose scree and technical descents. Our instructors will be with you every step of the way to guide you through it!

If you're looking for something a little more hands-on like grade 1 or 2 terrain then get in contact about our Skyrunning Development course!

We send out a course information pack with all bookings which will highlight all the equipment you need and what to bring on the day. Because Skyrunning is pretty much trail running on steep mountain terrain, we ask that you bring trail running shoes, a running pack/vest and a warm layer in case we need to stop. You will also need full waterproofs for this course. For more information please get in touch.

These courses are less about speed and fast times and more about learning and helping you develop as a runner. We workshop a number of sections of the journey and take lots of breaks to talk giving you time to relax and enjoy the day. The pace will be set by our running guides but you can expect to walk all the uphills and run the flats and some downhill sections.
