course info

We believe Trail Running is the ultimate way to experience the outdoors where you give up the pavements and roads for stunning scenery and miles of quiet country trails. For most runners it’s a liberating experience and many will never go back to the roads once they experience the joy of running outdoors on the trails.

Conwy valley and the North Wales coast is host to some of the finest trail running in the country and every year visitors flock from all over the UK to run, cycle and hike in these hills. For us Conwy is where we call home and were privileged to have these amazing hills on our doorstep.

Our Introduction to Trail Running course is a fun day of running in the hills around Conwy, North Wales. Your instructor will develop your technique for running up hill and improve your confidence for running downhill. Throughout the day you can also expect to learn the basics of navigation, what to wear, what to do in an emergency and what to eat and drink to keep you fuelled up during the day.

  • Clothing and equipment advice.
  • Downhill running workshop.
  • Footwork drills.
  • Using a map and compass for running.
  • What to do in an emergency.
  • Test out different running packs.

Our instructors for this course are all experienced trail and mountain running instructors and hold the Mountain Leader or UK athletics coaching awards as minimum. They are all active runners who have competed in races like the LDMT, OMM, Skyline Series and are passionate about running in the outdoors.

What’s covered on the day!

All aspects of trail running will be covered from running technique over different terrain, basic running navigation, weather, clothing, essential kit, route planning, decision making, emergency situations and a lot more!

Things you need to know.

This course is a relaxed day of running in the hills with plenty of stops and rests. Ideally you will be able to run 10km already, but the day is not fast paced and will be more focused on skills and enjoying the day rather than setting fast times. If you’re unsure about your fitness levels just drop us an email and we can discuss your ability level

A kit list will be sent out once we receive your booking. You will need running shoes that can handle gravel and dirt, a waterproof coat to keep you dry if it rains and a rucksack to carry drinks and some snacks in. If you want more information about what to bring on the day before you book just drop us an email and we will happily help.

Chris

Just got back from a fantastic weekend with Matt on the Welsh 3k and couldn't have asked for a better time. We had blue skies and cool air so it wasn't too hot and the views were simply incredible. Matt set a great pace allowing us to push our limits but never going beyond what we were capable of and we finished in 18 hours 32 mins. Hes a top bloke and I would certainly recommend him and The Mountaineering Company to anybody. Thanks again Matt. You will certainly see us again next year no doubt!

Chris Mansell

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!
