Run| Introduction to Fastpacking | North Wales

Course Info

Fastpacking is best described as fast light and overnight where you head into the hills for a multi-day trail running adventure. It has become hugely popular for established hiking routes like the Pennine Way, Tour du Mont Blanc and the Haute Route with the minimalistic style allowing you to cover large distances in less than half of the normal hiking time.

We will also put all the skills covered in day 1 to practice that evening with a camp out at a campsite along route.

Equipment

All participants will receive a full kit list detailing essential items they need to attend this course. We do have some lightweight tents (1.2kg) and 30L running packs that we loan on a first-come-first-served basis. We would recommend purchasing your own summer sleeping bag. If you have any questions about the equipment please do get in contact.

Ability Level

This course is about the enjoyment of running in the mountains on a multi-day fast-packing adventure with friends - this is not a performance course. Your running guides will keep the pace relaxed where we walk the uphills, and run some of the flats and downhills. To attend, you will need a good level of fitness as we will be travelling around 10 miles per day with overnight gear. If you can walk in the mountains and run around 10-15km then this course is for you! We also workshop many of the skills like using poles, moving over rocky ground and camp craft - expect plenty of discussion giving time for photos and a breather.

ACCOMMODATION

Our route for the two days includes an overnight stay at a valley campsite - we do this to make the course more inclusive and less daunting for those trying out fastpacking for the first time. Camping fees are included in the price of this course.

On occasion where group ability and weather allow, we may use a mountain wild camping location - we will discuss this with you during the course.

Testimonials

I've now been on two courses with The Mountaineering company. Both courses were great, learnt loads and Matt/Sam were brilliant instructors. I would definitely recommend to anyone getting into mountaineering to book onto intro and development courses. I'm looking forward to doing more courses with them in the future. (Google Review)

Just the best! From start to finish, this was by far our best experience with a guiding company. We genuinely felt that our goals and objectives were their priority, and the whole experience gave us fantastic preparation and confidence for our next trip to the Alps. A huge thank you to the entire team at TMC — we couldn’t recommend you highly enough!

SUPERB Mountaineering Development course. The instructor's energy, enthusiasm and judgement meant we packed in a vast amount. Felt like 6 months progress in 3 days. Thank you TMC.

I thoroughly recommend Matt as a leader & guide. I experienced an exhilarating & fun day with a super group doing Matt's Ogwen Classics day. Matt managed our mixed levels of ability & confidence with a calm, encouraging, alert & purposeful manner. He inspired confidence through recognition of our efforts & shared his knowledge & experience to support our skill development. The day passed all too quickly!

The Introduction to Mountaineering course was exactly what I needed to build confidence in my skills and knowledge. I'm ready and super keen to make the step towards leading scrambles and trad routes.

Had a fantastic weekend with Matt on the mountain skills course - he is really friendly + approachable, and tailored the two days to what we enjoyed + wanted to learn. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to build their confidence with mountain hiking + navigation!

I cannot rate these guys highly enough. They provided 3 guides for our Welsh 3000’s attempt along with full support, these guys couldn’t have been nicer. I felt safe and well led throughout, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them for your adventures!
